Eagles of Southwest Alaska
Photo Workshop

$2,495

Flight Destination: Dutch Harbor, AK

A pair of neighboring islands in the Aleutians is home to more than 600 year-round resident bald eagles who thrive on the fishing industry. Be amazed as up to three dozen eagles converge just feet in front of you making for easy interaction and flight shots on this unique eagle photography workshop. Great landscapes and the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska provide a great backdrop to some incredible eagle photography. For the history buff, there are some interesting W.W. II remains and bunkers to add another dimension to the trip.

Currently the only workshop operator running eagle workshops to this location, you will find the opportunities here are unique from any other Alaska eagle photo trip. Having led trips to Haines for several years, the Dutch Harbor eagles are more predictable and flight shots more common. You are guaranteed to get shots of the eagles with talons extended hitting the water to grab a fish. And closer to you than you ever thought possible.

Be amazed at the site of eagles sitting on light poles as if they are the local pigeons. Almost everywhere you turn in the area you will find a bald eagle. And if you want close-up shots, some of these majestic birds will let you get to with 5 to 10 feet from them. And this is in the wild.

A great opportunity awaits if one of the fishing boats is mending a net as more than 100 eagles will converge on the area and seek out fish scraps in the net just in front of the hotel we stay at.

At this time of year, nesting is taking place and plenty of immature eagles join the feeding frenzy. There might even be a chance of looking down from a coastal cliff into a nest with a young eagle in it.

You are sure to give your trigger finger a great workout as for several hours two times a day you will be firing off hundreds of images of eagles in flight. My flight photos have ben taken with just a 100-400mm lens. You can use a larger lens, but there are times that's too much.

Don't let the price of the airfare from Anchorage to Dutch Harbor scare you as it's well worth the extra cost to get here. Cool weather is also expected at this time of year with highs in the low to mid 50s, so you will need to have a little bit of warm clothing as you will be standing around quite a bit to capture this great action.
