kodiak brown bear

Nature does not put on a show quite like the coastal brown bears of Alaska chasing and catching salmon as they make their way up the many rivers and around the bays in the state. No place else outside of Kodiak Island is know for the size of the bears seen and photographed daily. The reason for this is the massive numbers of salmon that go up the rivers to spawn during the summer months so the bears are able to gorge themselves on them throughout the season. Many rivers have millions of salmon winding their way up them yearly.

We will be located at a lodge where we will take a float plane out four of our five bear shooting days to some of the most productive bays and rivers on the southwest corner of Kodiak Island taking full advantage of their knowledge and scouting to where the best bear activity is. This year they are seeing as many as 17 bear a day at one of their favorite spots and at another there is a 10 foot male showing up regularly. The best thing - we will be the only group there photographing the bears for the day. Our fift photo day will be boat based where we will have the opportunity to photograph shore bears, whales, otters, sea lions, seals, puffins, deer and fox.

With an abundant and endless run of salmon entering the bays and rivers June through September, high concentrations of bears take advantage of this rich food source. A dream come true for any photographer wanting images of bears. We will photogoraph the bears follow the salmon as they continue upstream.

Images of the huge brown bears are counted amongst the most recognizable photos anywhere. To experience this first-hand is something you will soon not forget and the images you come away with will be some you can show off for years to come. The bears do not associate humans with food so they will walk closer than you can imagine and not even turn their head to look at you because of the large number of fish in the area.

Facts About Kodiak Island and its Bears - The island boasts one of the highest brown bear populations in the world due to the large number of salmon that swim up its rivers each year to spawn. The current bear population on the island is estimated to be around 3,500 - that's more brown bear per square mile than anywhere else you go to photograph bear. Kodiak’s are the largest brown bears in the world. A large male Kodiak bear can be five feet high at the shoulder while still on all fours and when on its hind legs it can reach 10 feet tall. Our base is located on a river that hosts four species of Pacific Salmon as well as steelhead trout and artic char thoughout the summer season.

Group size is limited for this workshop. This serves to maximize your photo and viewing opportunities while maintaining a low impact so as to not disturb the bears, allowing them to behave naturally. This is a location without boardwalks, lottery platforms or large groups of tourists or any other photographers so you will have maximum opportunity for incredible bear photography. Yes, we will be the only one's here when shooting.
